For the most part, I hate television commercials. I hate how there are so many of them in a row. I hate how they interrupt me when I’m watching something informational and educational, such as Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew (don’t laugh, you can learn a lot from the shenanigans of the “I desperately need work” celebs on that show and how handsome Dr. Drew shows empathy for their stories, his lip poked out in what I like to call his “sad pouty lip” making him all the more attractive), but I digress. The truth is I find most commercials boorish. But, occasionally a company gets it right with clever and entertaining advertising.
Case in point, Intel’s “Rock Star” commercial depicts a guy by the name of Ajay Bhatt swaggering with great confidence through an office where the men are clapping and patting him on the back and the women are swooning while he signs autographs and basks in their admiration. The ad reads “Our rock stars aren’t like your rock stars.” His name pops up and it shows that he is the co-inventor of the USB. That makes him a rock star to me. How could I add songs to my IPod without a USB port?
My favorite commercial at the moment is for Orbit Gum. It’s the one where a man and woman are in an office and another woman walks in catching the two of them together. They use phrases like “Doo doo head cootie queen” and “Who you calling a cootie queen you lint licker.” (I’m cracking up now just thinking about it).
I suppose…no, I know the commercial caught my attention because the phrases they use sound really dirty, although there are no inappropriate words other than “doo doo”, if you call that inappropriate. I know it appeals to the tween and teen crowd…I reach this conclusion because my 12 and 13-year old sons laugh every time someone says something that sounds inappropriate but isn’t (example, if someone says “they butted heads”, my boys would inevitably laugh out loud and say “they said butt heads”). It obviously appeals to an older crowd too, as I’m far from my teenage years, but I still giggle like a 12-year old girl every time I see it.
